Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is an escalating global health threat, contributing to 1.27 million of the 7.7 million annual deaths linked to bacterial infections and could claim 10 million by 2050. A particular challenge is posed by intracellular bacteria, which evade antibiotics by hiding within host cells. Meropenem (MEM), a broad spectrum carbapenem antibiotic capable of penetrating host cells, is used to treat infections caused by resistant Gram-negative and some Gram-positive intracellular pathogens.
